Good Afternoon,

For this shot I wanted to create an image that has the look of the classic CSR stock photograph but without losing the realistic feel that so many stock photographs lack.

For this shot I used my 430 EX flash mounted on a tripod behind and below the monitor to blow out the background. I was somewhat surprised to find that a single, snooted flash gave an almost perfectly white background in spite of the fact it was fired at a fairly deep window with venetian blinds and not a clean white wall. One thing I learned through creating this shot is when shooting a portrait like this it is frequently preferable to shoot faster and then clean up small problems in Photoshop. Granted, a lot of people will disagree with this statement, but I find that if one is not careful it is easy to spend 5 minutes on adjusting things in camera when the same fix could be achieved in 30 seconds of your own time in PS. I am not advocating the “fix it later” approach across the board but, particularly with portraits, being able to get the shot with 5-10 minutes of shooting and then fixing the background issues with 5 minutes of PS work is preferable to spending 20 minutes re-arraigning and shooting the subject.

If you disagree that is fine but I am not the only one who thinks this:
Photoshop is NOT a bad wordšŸ™‚

Enjoy!
