Good Morning,

Yesterday even we had a great time with our friends, the Martins. Volleyball, great fellowship, and excellent deserts, what more could you ask for? We even had occasional rain showers to keep us cool. 🙂

This is a shot of the might Conrad going for the spike minutes before the clouds in the background let loose with a torrential downpour that ended our volleyball for the evening. To capture this shot I used my 430 EX II, with a diffuser cap, set to -2 EV at 24mm zoom to allow me to properly expose for the awesome clouds while still properly lighting up the main subject. I enhanced the contrast quite a bit with curves but no additional adjustment to the clouds exposure was required.

Enjoy!

P.S. This photo also has a pretty significant hidden edit in it.

  1. It’s a little unfortunate you had to use 1600 ISO, because it creates a lot of noise grain in the clouds. But I guess you had to because you barely froze the ball even at 1/640 sec.

Out of curiosity, do you know if there is a rule-of-thumb shutter speed for freezing large balls in the air?
