Good Morning,

Last night around 9:00 I realized that I had not taken a photo for the day, shocking I know, but some days it is hard to do it early in the day. We experimented with some available light pictures of Ben with his guitar but they were markedly unsatisfactory. The the idea dawned on me to use my external flash, triggered remotely, to kill the ambient light and create my own lighting effect. This trick is very useful when shooting indoor portraits with highly distracting backgrounds as you can simply black them out entirely.

The lighting setup is very simple with one 430 EX II, zoomed in to 105mm with a -2 exp. comp in ETTL, stuck on the wall about 6 feet off of the ground. Benjamin is sitting on one of our beds and there is a lamp about 5 feet behind the neck of the guitar which is casting a tiny bit of fill light. That is pretty much the extent of what went in to this picture as post work was very minor, mainly brightening it up a bit and removing one or two hot spots in the background caused by a reflective surface catching some of the flash.

Enjoy!
