My new toy… ahem, tool. πŸ™‚

Out of curiosity, how many of you can tell me why a 3D artist, such as myself, would want a lawn ornament like this? The first one to answer get’s a prize!

  1. This reflective globe, sometimes called a gazing ball, is used by filmmakers in preparation for 3D and special effects. It generally has two purposes, 1) to give accurate lighting information for the computer generated effect. 2) to provide a 180 (sometimes 360) degree map of the room that would be used as the reflection off of shiny 3D material such as a 3D robot.

Sometimes a grey globe is also used to provide accurate color.

    Was that specific enough?

  2. Correct!

I will tweak your description slightly.

This ball actually is used to provide a 360 degree view of the room, not a 180, via stitching together two shots. Believe it or not, a single shot of a sphere like this, taken with a telephoto lens, will actually give almost an entire 360 shot with some major warping on one side. But even with warping, you can see almost the entire FOV with from just one angle.

    And now for the prize.

You may give me a subject that you would like me to shoot that, as long as it is fairly reasonable, I will give my best shot at creating. If you want a flying side kick over a lava flow I may have to say no, but off the side of a warehouse is doable. πŸ™‚
