Today was just one of those days where one picture out of all the nice pictures you took that day just jumps out and grabs you! Last night I was torn between three neat pictures but today, while I have at least 20 similar pictures, this one is just the perfect combination of color, timing, and subject. For those of you who want to know, he is breaking four slabs of concrete that are each one inch thick and around 12 inches long with 3/8 inch spacers between them.

Interestingly enough, the exif data pretty much says it all, the highest shutter speed I have ever used, with the lens stopped down to f2.8 to give me a nice amount of DOF, and a high ISO to give me the correct exposure right out of the camera. The one thing I did do that really helped was using a monopod. While it is not necessary for shots with this fast of a shutter speed, in this case it was important because I was shaking rather badly from the adrenaline rush caused by breaking two slabs of concrete for the first time.

In post I had to crop the photo since it is very hard to tell exactly where the subject is going to be in a picture like this were the subject moves a lot as they throw their whole body into the break. I did my typical round of noise reduction, sharpening, and a slight curves adjustment. Amazingly enough the auto white balance was flat-out dead on so I didn’t need to adjust that any.

Enjoy!

  1. That is pretty neat how you can see the flying particles of concrete dust. His expression is a good one!
